The Group Development Questionnaire (GDQ) is an assessment tool used to clarify issues that are obstructing the group’s effectiveness. Research has shown that groups go through several distinct phases of development. During the normal course of group development, groups can get stuck in or revert to any of the earlier develop-mental stages. The GDOS allows researchers to determine the developmental stage of a group by categorizing and counting each complete thought exhibited during a group session into one of eight categories: Dependency statements, Counterdependency, Fight, Flight, Pairing, Counterpairing, Work, or Unscorable statements (Wheelan, 1994).
